Frequently asked questions
What is an emergency fund?
It is a reserve of liquid money (an easily accessible savings account) set aside exclusively to cover essential expenses if you lose your source of income or face an unexpected event: job loss, a medical emergency, an urgent car or home repair.
How many months of expenses should I keep?
Standard: 3-6 months of essential expenses. 3 months if you have a stable job + secondary income + good health. 6 months if you rely on a single income or have children. 9-12 months if you are a freelancer, self-employed, or work in a volatile industry.
Only essential expenses, or all of my expenses?
Essentials only: housing, food, basic utilities, transportation to get to work, health care, minimum debt payments. Leave out Netflix, restaurants, vacations, new clothes — you would cut those in a real emergency.
Where should I keep my emergency fund?
In a high-yield savings account (HYSA) or money market accounts — liquid instruments that pay some interest without risk. Avoid stocks, ETFs, or crypto: they can drop 30-50% right when you need the money most.
What if I can't save 3-6 months all at once?
Start with the minimum goal of $1,000 (it covers 80% of statistical emergencies). Then automate a % of each paycheck until you reach 3-6 months. Wälo helps you work out how much to contribute each month: you create a savings goal and record each contribution as you go.
Why an emergency fund changes your financial life
The emergency fund is the only thing that separates a setback (losing your job, getting sick) from a disaster (losing your job, taking on debt at 40% APR to get by, spiraling).
Basic rules:
- Calculate based on essential expenses, not your current lifestyle
- Keep it in a liquid account (savings account, not stocks)
- Start with $1,000 before paying down debts aggressively (Dave Ramsey Baby Step 1)
- Then build 3-6 months depending on your profile
- Once it's complete, don't touch it except in a real emergency
What counts as an emergency: being laid off, a medical emergency, an urgent car/home repair. What does NOT count: vacations, clothes, a Black Friday deal, Christmas gifts.
